Gina’s Story

I came to know about Weston A Price/ancestral diet when I became a new mom and stumbled upon “why not to feed your baby Cheerios”. Uh oh! That’s my go-to snack!! So then I got Nourishing Traditions book of baby care from the library and never turned to Gina CoddlingCheerios again. I started my son on pastured egg yolk and liver, plenty of butter, and we switched to pink salt.

We are low income so the changes have been slow over the last 2.5 years, but now I make all our bread by long fermentation, homemade sauerkraut, bone broth, soak all grains, no soy, no sugar, drink low pasteurized non/homogenized milk, LOTS of grass fed butter, pastured meats including liver, and mostly organic produce. My cycles regulated, I had 2 wonderful natural pregnancies and births and easily breastfed. My sons never get sick, have happy dispositions, no problems teething, and meet or surpass all milestones. We also don’t vaccinate. They have wide faces and palates and strong, well-formed teeth.

Most amazingly, my husband is no longer lactose intolerant!! At 4 months of age he was started on formula for lactose intolerant babies and has been very sensitive to milk his whole life. Now at 24, he enjoys a glass of milk almost every day. He also stopped getting sinus infections multiple times a year, or any illness really. His digestion is slowly improving as is his skin which is very sensitive and always bumpy and red.

What’s important to me about the Weston Price Foundation is the quality of the food. I was in a macrobiotic, near-vegan cooking school in NYC when I met Sally Fallon. I was in my mid-30’s. Somehow the school had invited her to speak on “Why Butter is Better” (!!!). Her message resonated with me so much.

I immediately laid aside my vegetarian strivings and began to eat in the way she described traditional diets. The main thing for me was taste. It made alot of sense to me that food that tasted good was going to good for me.

Through my love of butter, I began to want to be a dairy farmer. I left NYC to start a farming internship in New Jersey. All along the way I adhered more and more to a Weston Price diet. I became a mother at the age of 43, giving birth to an extremely healthy baby at home.

When my son was two, I started a Weston Price chapter in our area (I had since moved to the midwest) — it turned out to be a wonderful boon for me because the people who attend the meetings are really in the know about where to find good locally grown food.

My son and I are still healthy. We never go to the doctor and rarely get sick. My son has never had a vaccination or a cavity (several of his classmates have diabetes and are on the autism spectrum). I raise virtually all of our own meat, and raw dairy is locally sourced. I prepare farm-raised meals for large gatherings, and I see how satisfied people are after a meal that includes lots of healthy fat.

Kate’s Story

My story begins with me looking into fluoride in our drinking water. It didn’t make sense that it’s dangerous if my kids shallow some while brushing their teeth but it was safe in our drinking water. A few years and lots of research later, and I’m a believer fluoride does not belong in our bodies, at all! But the problem was more then how do I give my children good clean water but also how do I give them clean food. Fluoride, is in all their favorite snacks and juices, it’s in everything. I decided to start to make everything that I can from scratch and only buy organic whole foods, and on my journey of learning “how” to do that I also learned how much better natural food is for you! When my daughter was 6 she was showing signs of dental fluorosis, she is now 10 and her teeth look perfectly amazing.

Also cutting all the artificial flavors/ preservatives/ colors out of my children’s diet has made them behave so much better. It seemed they could never pay attention before, or they were always “looking for a fight” they just seemed very aggressive or to the other extreme they would seem completely lethargic and overall unhappy most of the time. Now that we are eating whole foods we are all happy and healthy and when the kids get exposed to that kind of food I know just by the way they are behaving! Like the neighbor girl would give them snack crackers when they went over to her house to play or grandma who just has to give them candy when I’m not around, I can always tell a few hours later.

I have just had another baby, he turned 1 a few months ago. He is without a doubt the healthiest baby I have ever seen, he runs around the house like he is Hercules, he is so strong and so smart and his doc even said ” he’s doing things a 2yr old. can’t do yet” and I believe it’s because we have been living such a clean healthy life style. I’m so glad we figured out how to take control of our lives. We are what we eat!

Eileen’s Story

My real food journey began several years ago when I was first introduced to the idea via an online radio program. Along with a few other changes, I learned for the first time what it meant to truly eat healthfully. After eating the WAP way for abMoses Lanatiout three years and now free of Lyme disease, my husband and I decided that it was time to start a family. We included many of the recommended preconception dietary recommendations including salmon roe, raw milk, bone broth, liver and also a high quality royal jelly by Premier Research Labs. Two months later we were stunned to find out that we were already pregnant.

Though I was under a great deal of stress throughout most of my pregnancy while my husband was dealing with a severe reaction to a new tick bite, the traditional diet combined with high-quality supplements by PRL and the grace of God, I went into labor at exactly 42 weeks. Our plans for a home birth with our midwives went out the window when I was diagnosed as being preeclamptic that same day. Twenty-four hours later our healthy baby boy was born via cesarean section weighing in at 6lb. 14oz. We were so thankful that he was allowed the two extra weeks gestation that would have never been permitted by a medical doctor because of my condition.

Moses Gabriel immediately started gaining weight and has never lost an ounce since his birth due to his robust health and his ability to latch right away. He went from being in the 50th percentile at birth to the 90th percentile for height and 95th for weight by eight weeks and has remained there. He is now a delightful, curious and engaging fiften-months-old who enjoys life to the fullest. Along with my breast milk, some of his favorite real foods include salmon roe, Kerrygold Butter, raw milk and cheese, pastured eggs, bone broth, a variety game meats and fish, dried sardines, nori, stewed fruits and fruit smoothies with greens.

Leah’s Story

In January 2013 I decided to start a preconception diet, since I was getting married in February and knew we would start trying to conceive within the year. I already followed a fairly healthy diet but I implemented some changes based on the WAPF pregnancy diet. The biggest change was drinking raw milk (16oz/day on average). I also increased my egg and butter consumption, began eating organ meats (I cheated: there was an awesome local restaurant that had chicken liver mousse on the menu), making bone broth, and drinking kombucha and milk kefir.

At the time of starting the diet I had been suffering from endometriosis for 3 years. The main symptom was excessive bleeding, both in amount and frequency; at this time my very heavy periods were lasting around 20 days/month.

After just a few months of this new diet, my period was only 10 days long and for the first time in at least 4 years, I was allergy-free that season! April, May, and June continued to show improvements in my cycle, getting down to around a week in duration in mid-June. Around this time, my husband and I decided we would start trying to conceive in July. But when my period didn’t come at all that month we realized there was no need to try because I was already pregnant!

In retrospect I realize that infertility was likely a symptom of endometriosis, I feel very fortunate to have healed myself with food, and not have to suffer through infertility, as many families do. I had been under the care of an OBGYN for management of endometriosis, including having a laparoscopy and D&C to remove the scar tissue that was building up and causing excruciating pain. Unfortunately the only treatment option my Dr offered was to have this surgery every few years, as needed, and use hormonal therapy to control symptoms, something I wasn’t willing to do.
My daughter is now 21 months old and my period has yet to return due to continued breast feeding (yay – this is a much welcomed break).  She has been so healthy and is thriving on a WAPF based diet.
Also, I’ve been seasonal allergy free for the past 3 years, both fall and spring.  Once, I started to have the scratchy throat that was the familiar start to weeks of allergy symptoms, but after increasing my consumption of raw milk to 16oz/day again, the symptoms went away.
I’m not sure what exactly was lacking or damaged prior to beginning the WAPF diet, but I do believe that drinking raw milk changed my life.

Gena’s Story

After many frustrating and fruitless visits to doctors, I began researching nutrition whFam picen my first child experienced severe eczema which we ultimately healed through the GAPS diet and traditional nutrition.   As the whole family began changing our habits, amazing things happened- my son’s eczema cleared up, my excess weight was lost, my brain fog disappeared, everyone’s energy was restored.  Since then, I’ve been a firm believer in the benefits of a traditional diet, and haven’t been able to stop researching!

My children are now 6 and nearly 4, and we have been on a traditional diet since my son’s illness.  Our diet includes cod liver oil, only pastured meats & eggs, raw dairy, organic fruits and vegetables, and as much bone broth as we can consume!  Although there are new challenges as the kids grow (tell me why people serve junk food at birthday parties?!), I must brag that my children are in wonderful health!  Eggs from pastured chickens and sourdough toast with loads of real butter fuel their mornings so they can learn at school.  Raw milk is a staple in our home, as is creme brulee.  Fermented pickles keeps their digestion in order.  “Special sauce” aka cod liver oil keeps them healthy through the winter.  We routinely eat drink bone broth and soups.  My children get 1-2 colds per year.  Although they have both had ear infections, all have cleared up on their own. Neither child has ever been on antibiotics.

Our children sleep well, can focus and learn in school, and are well-rounded little individuals.  We’re a happy and healthy family and we plan to stay that way!
